Mark Fleming is a citizen of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. In his 40s, he has been into creative writing since he was a teenager, plastered in Killing Joke and Scars badges. His first attempts to express himself were feverishly scribbling lyrics and cobbling together fanzines while playing in Edinburgh punk band 4 Minute Warning. His writing evolved haphazardly but discovering James Kelman via a NME book review in 1983 steered him into the wave he's still surfing to this day: contemporary British fiction.
He has had numerous stories published in diverse outlets, from The Big Issue to football fanzines, The Leither Magazine to laurahird.com, the Picador Book of Contemporary Scottish Fiction to Shorts: the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday anthology. As well as fiction he writes blogs, reviews and satire, examples of which are all on this site.
Fleming's debut novel BrainBomb, a semi-autobiographical rollercoaster ride through the capital's 70s punk scene, casual romance in Lothian Road discos and historic fantasy culminating in mental breakdown, was published byChipmunka in 2009. A short story anthology Bedlam followed in 2010. Currently he is finishing another shorts collection and working on two novels.
He also publishes work from other writers in the Creative workshop on this site. Email any writing, poems, prose, short stories or general rants to markjfleming@live.co.uk, with 'Submission' in the subject line.
Fleming is a freelance writer and is still hooked on loud guitar music, playing in post punk band Desperation A.M. He lives and works in Portobello.
